Pastor-Teachers

According to John Stott (1), it is legitimate to think that the expression “pastor and teacher (2)” describes a single ministry.

That of a shepherd, called to take care of the flock, and in particular to provide them with food, that is, to teach them. These people are gifts from Christ to His church. They encourage every member to identify, develop and put into practice their gifts, in order that the church might be a place where all serve together. They work to equip others in view of their varied ministries.

The pastor-teachers of the missionary team consolidate that which God has brought to birth. They work on the continuing training of the elders and help to equip them to carry out their respective ministries amongst the members of the church. They help the church and its leaders to better understand the plans of God. They are advisors, leaving the church to take initiatives and assume responsibilities according to their autonomy. Aware of the interdependence of churches to fulfil their threefold mission towards God, their brothers and the world, they encourage cooperation between churches and between the church and the missionary team.
